September 8th. Two years ago today Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth died & His Majesty King Charles acceded to the throne. Rutland held a small ceremony and I laid flowers at our statue to remember Queen Elizabeth’s life of service. This was followed by a service at All Saints’ Church, Oakham.
Merchant Navy Day 2024
September 3rd. Raising the Red Ensign at Oakham Castle on Merchant Navy Day.
Rutland pays tribute to the past and present service given by our Merchant Navy, so called because of their contribution to our island’s defence. Without them we would have lost both world wars; merchant seamen proportionately lost more men than the armed forces.
Celebrating the Royal Anglian Regiment founding
September 1st was the 60th #anniversary of the founding of the Royal Anglians. I was invited to an amazing Drumhead service & parade at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford. We should be so proud of “the Vikings” and “the Poachers”, a.k.a. 1 & 2 Royal Anglian Brigade, who are based at Kendrew barracks in Rutland.

A march past (click to see a video) was part of the Royal Anglian’s regimental day, in the presence of HRH the Duke of Gloucester; together with military bikers, cadets and many veterans plus their families, many from Rutland. The Regimental family feeling was tangible.
50 years with the Council for the Protection of Rural England
It was a pleasure to hand over a certificate and medal to Sir Laurence Howard to mark his 50 years of membership of the Council for the Protection of Rural England.
He has stood down after many years of service as CPRE’s Rutland President. I am delighted to be the new president. Thank you!
