Shires School Oakham goes from strength to strength. Assisted by Sue Jarrom, High Sheriff of Rutland, I was honoured to cut the ribbon to open their spectacular new purpose built classrooms. These will help in the mission to achieve as much independence possible for students who have severe autism. The students are community minded and enjoy living in Oakham.
New Defence Rehabilitation Centre nears completion
The statue is of Major General Sir Robert Jones, an orthopaedic surgeon. He developed early prosthetics and has this place of honour at the new Defence & National Clinical Rehabilitation Centre. Built at Stanford Hall (between Nottingham and Loughborough) to provide outstanding facilities for clinical specialist rehabilitation, principally for those injured in the course of military service. It is nearly complete, though as the image shows it’s still ‘hard hats’ for now. And aren’t those safety boots fetching???
An American recruit to the UK – on American independence day
A great way to celebrate the 4th of July – American Independence day. Beth Chesterfield, born in the USA, celebrated by becoming a British citizen!
Pictured are Beth & yours truly after the Rutland ceremony. This was my first British Citizenship ceremony as Lord-Lieutenant. It was a great honour to be involved.
De Montfort University’s talented students
Impulse buys are always best! While visiting De Montfort University’s (fine art and crafts) Final Degree show I saw Angie Packer’s glass. She graduated last year and is ‘artist in residence’ this year. I bought her wave decanter to go on this mirrored table with two other pieces of glass… stunning! Thanks Angie
Supporting Thorpe Hall Hospice
Hospices are about living well as well as dying well. 50% of patients return home after spending time at Thorpe Hall Hospice. Help is also provided for the family.
There was a fantastic summer evening garden party at Lyndon Hall in aid of Thorpe Hall in the evening of 2nd July. Sunshine, jazz, ice creams (from the cart pictured below) and a good cause – what more could we ask?
Free Live Music at Cutts Close
Melton Town Band playing at Cutts Close this Sunday. A great way to relax in the sun. It happens most summer Sundays afternoons – I’m surprised it’s not better attended. Did you know about it?
Support for the new Defence and National Rehabilitation Centre
The charity Polo Lunch held by Rutland Polo club was a great success- if a little warm! It was in support of the new Defence & National Rehabilitation Centre which will treat the seriously wounded with all the latest techniques. It is currently being completed at Stanford Hall, near Loughborough – a great cause. Thanks to all, especially the organiser-in-chief Edwin De Lisle – centre.

This is Team Rutland at the Leicestershire and Rutland School Games, held at Uppingham School. Winners from individual school sports days gathered from across both counties. There was great excitement, with over 1,000 primary school youngsters and masses of competition.
Pictured are all Rutland’s youngsters plus Barbara Crellin (chair of LSA), Ben Higgins (England athlete) and myself.
Rutland Poppy Project planning Armistice centenary
Rutland Poppy Project has captured the imaginations of young and old across Rutland. Over 10,000 ceramic poppies are being made to commemorate WW1. Many designs were sent in to the judging panel (pictured) – lots of great ideas. We decided to use combination of ideas for an exciting display at Oakham Castle in November.
