Rutland library service is superb

I had a great day in Oakham library this week. It is a light, well carpeted, spacious series of spaces with books including e-books , large print and audio books – and lots more besides, most at no charge. There are  computers with free internet access, photocopying and printing facilities and DVD hire. The Children’s Centre has toys, Rhyme Time sessions, offers classes for new parents and chances for parents and children to get together. What a great use of space this new extension turns out to be. It is comfortable, modern and in frequent use. There were 8 very young babies and mothers meeting whilst I was there.

Much of the work of Rutland libraries is supported by volunteers. Indeed, if you reading this and are at a loose end then volunteering in Oakham, Uppingham, Ryhall or Ketton libraries can be a rewarding and valuable use of your time. Volunteers are always welcome!

Rutland also has a mobile library which visits the villages in county, books DVDs etc can be ordered for collection. This is such a help, especially for those who find transport difficult.

RAF Wittering celebrates 100 years of the RAF

RAF Wittering are celebrating 100 years of RAF. This fab cake is tiny part of it! They have also had hundreds of young people at the base learning new skills. So impressed with the history and the vision for the future of RAF! Great job.

Rutland pottery poppies to commemorate the end of WW1 this November

The new High Sheriff, Sue Jarron & yours truly get stuck into making poppies for the Rutland Poppy Project. Serious fun! A great way to commemorate the end of WW1 in November. Ceramic poppies are also being made by young & old across the county. Typical Rutland; we are doing DIY. Look out for the display at Castle.  If our efforts are any guide, every poppy will be slightly different, even though we started with the same pattern!

Women in Philanthropy

I’m proud to be a member of the steering committee of Women in Philanthropy, which raises money for 3 less well known charities each year and also promotes them.

This year £3,793.44 each to (1) Centre for Fun and Families, (2) New Dawn New Day, (3 )Dementia Friendly Garden.  And another £3,000 + given to last year’s charities.

Youth mental resilience

Rutland ‘s young people are determined to increase mental resilience and awareness of mental health. Last month representatives from all of the secondary schools in county held a meeting. They back Resilient Rutland in its Big Lotter bid. Fingers Crossed!

Her Majesty’s Letters Patent

Fabulous day today – proper spring sunshine and my Letters Patent from Her Majesty The Queen arrived, formally appointing me Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland. Complete with a remarkably large red seal and a red leather wallet.

A real red letter day!
